Mastery Learning

What can your child expect when they first enter our QSI International School of Astana’s Mastery Learning classroom?
What does this look like or what will I (as a parent) notice? Help me to visualize it.
In the pursuit of educational excellence, understanding whether students are truly learning or experiencing deep learning is paramount. This Mastery Learning article explores various aspects of our approach to effective teaching, traits of Quality Schools International (QSI) teaching, classroom dynamics, and strategies that we utilize to integrate data to continuously guide instruction. As a parent, this is what you can expect:
A. Assessing, modeling, and supporting student learning:
-
We encourage students to extend learning beyond the classroom and inquire both at school and at home.
-
We promote the importance of explaining their thinking (higher order thinking) and demonstrating concepts through sharing and/or modeling.
-
We vary our assessments including formal and informal assessments, asking students to apply knowledge in various contexts (i.e. we do not “teach to the test”).
-
We support students in meeting their objectives by guiding them in expressing interest in challenging tasks and providing the platform for them to engage in meaningful topics or activities.

PSG Spotlight: Arslah Waqar
Arslah Waqar is the current Middle School Student Council Liaison for the PSG. She helps coordinate between middle school and PSG by listening to the students and reporting back to PSG to discuss how they can help. She was inspired to join the Parent Support Group because she wanted to give back to her community.
However, her story starts in Lahore, Pakistan, where she grew an affinity for science and her country’s traditional food. Originally, Ms. Arslah wanted to become a physician, but due to the strict rules in her country, she found another path in pharmaceuticals. Since then, she has traveled to Angola, Italy, and now Kazakhstan with her two sons and husband. She is fluent in Urdu and English, but also knows some Italian and Portuguese. While traveling abroad, she feels that she has grown as a person. “I am more accepting now of other cultures and religions,” she told us. Living overseas has had its many benefits, but there are definitely aspects of her home country that she misses. When we asked her about what she missed, she said without hesitation, “Food.”
She was drawn to the warmth of QSI’s community when she first arrived during the pandemic. The openness and kindness of the community made her love our school. Ever since she arrived, she has grown to love Astana for its safety, cleanliness, and its cold weather. The winters of Astana were a nice change since she grew up in the sweltering heat of northeast Pakistan.
QSI is grateful to have a person as lovely and helpful as Arslah Waqar. She is there for the middle schoolers when they need her and she is a wonderful addition to the community. We are thankful to have her with us!

Literacy Week
Literacy Week this year falls on the week of February 19th to the 23rd. We have many fun events planned, and we are inviting parents, teachers, and staff to participate in a special event called Stories Around the World!
We started this event during Literacy week last year, and we are looking to improve and expand it this year.
To participate in this event, you would bring in a story in a language other than English and read it to a group of students! When choosing a book, it's best if the reading time is around 5 minutes. Your time slots would be flexible to meet your availability. The best time for you to come in and read would be between 8:30am and 10:45am, so if you're able to come during that time frame, that's fantastic.
If this sounds like something you would enjoy, please email Jeanette at jeanette-smith@astana.qsi.org!
